The Mortal Kombat franchise has always had its ups and downs over the past 35 years, both in video game form — see Mortal Kombat: Special Forces, for example — and in live-action adaptations. The original Mortal Kombat movie from 1995 is still beloved by fans for its faithfulness to the source material. But that was quickly followed by the notoriously awful Mortal Kombat Annihilation, which put the film franchise on ice for more than 20 years. 2021’s Mortal Kombat movie reboot was greeted warmly by action movie fans, though some hardcore MK heads took issue with the movie’s original character, Cole Young.
Warner Bros.’ Mortal Kombat reboot was a huge hit on streaming, partly because the film debuted on HBO Max the same day it hit movie theaters. The success of Mortal Kombat begat a sequel, which Warner Bros. had high hopes for. Mortal Kombat 2 debuted in movie theaters in May 2026, but whatever streaming success its predecessor had didn’t translate to the box office.
Mortal Kombat 2 ended its theatrical run with a $129 million gross — not exactly a “flawless victory” considering the film’s reported $80 million production budget. A planned Mortal Kombat 3 is now up in the air.
But after landing on HBO Max in July, Mortal Kombat 2 has become a certified streaming hit. Mortal Kombat‘s direct sequel is currently the No. 1 streaming movie on HBO Max by a wide margin, according to FlixPatrol. MK2‘s revival on streaming could change the fortunes of the live-action Mortal Kombat film franchise.
When Polygon spoke to Mortal Kombat 2 director Simon McQuoid in July, he said that it was too early to tell if we’d get a Mortal Kombat 3. “It’s almost like Mortal Kombat 2 hasn’t had its full life cycle yet,” McQuoid said ahead of the movie’s home video and streaming releases. “So I think let it have its full life cycle and then, um, ask me in a few months. [laughs]”
That said, McQuoid and screenwriter Jeremy Slater were intentional about leaving doors open for a sequel.
“It’s kind of what we did in the first [Mortal Kombat], like, don’t get overconfident,” McQuoid said. “The audience tells you if there [should be] another one. Don’t get cocky about it and do what’s right for the characters. That’s always been the goal all along: Do whatever’s right for the truth of the characters.” Mortal Kombat 2 ended with a handful of cliffhangers that still need to be resolved.
Mortal Kombat 2 debuted in movie theaters on May 8 and opened to $48 million at the domestic box office. Ultimately, the movie went on to make $79.7 million domestically and $49.7 million internationally, according to Box Office Mojo. Warner Bros. released the film digitally on June 9, and a physical release (on 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD) arrived on July 28.

Mortal Kombat 2 received mostly positive reviews from critics, according to Rotten Tomatoes. Fans seemed to like the film better, praising the action, focus on fan-favorite characters, and grisly, game-accurate Fatalities. In Polygon’s review of Mortal Kombat 2, critic Jake Kleinman said the sequel “is an extremely forgettable movie.” Still, as a streaming favorite on HBO Max, it’s clearly resonating with an action movie audience.
