Here comes the sun: May’s weather forecast is out and Vancouver is about to get even warmer

2 May 20263 Mins Read

The Vancouver forecast for May is out, and you might want to pull the fan and air conditioners out of the closet to start the new month.

Environment and Climate Change (ECCC) is calling for temperatures during the first weekend of May to reach a high of 27°C inland.

However, the thermometer may be pushed even further to start next week, something that ECCC meteorologist Brian Proctor said may be the start of a warm trend for the entire month.

“B.C. is looking warm for much of May at this point in time,” Proctor told Daily Hive.

“There is a 60 to 80 per cent chance that temperatures will be above seasonal daytime highs, and there’s not a lot of precipitation in the forecast for much of the province.

The news comes just days after several heat records were broken in B.C., including one spot that shattered a 76-year-old record.

Port Hardy, home to the largest community on the northern part of Vancouver Island, smashed a record that has been in place since 1950 when it reached a temperature of 19.3°C.

Proctor also revealed that an El Niño is starting to develop, which could push temperatures even higher in Metro Vancouver and across B.C. later this year.

“We watch guidance from our own service and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and we see El Niño developing,” the meteorologist said. “It could be somewhat significant.

“There’s a better chance of above seasonal temperatures during El Niño, and it could be drier than what we typically expect.”

ECCC’s Canadian Climate Normals data shows that the daily average temperature in May for Vancouver is 13°C. The month averages 59.1 mm of rainfall.

The Vancouver forecast for the first full week of May is starting off warm, with a daytime high of up to 24°C in Vancouver and 28°C inland on Monday, May 4.

Overnight lows continue to hover between 8°C and 10°C as we transition into the new month.

“A ridge of high pressure is taking hold in the province,” explained ECCC meteorologist Colin Fong. “With the ridge in place, temperatures will get warmer, which brings dry and warm conditions. And historically, in land temperatures tend to be warmer by about four degrees than at YVR.”

If you’re looking for some ideas to make the most of your time, no matter the weather, check out our list of 15 fun things to do in Vancouver this weekend.

Start the new month with fun events from May 1 to 3, including White Rock Night Market, Vancouver Canadians baseball, and more.
