Here’s what to know before you float the Bow River in Calgary

4 June 20253 Mins Read

In the summertime, the sky and water should be the only things that feel blue. This sunny season, grab a friend or special someone, then hit the Bow River in Calgary, where you can get some fresh air and float your worries away.

What to know before floating the Bow

While it’s one of the most enjoyable activities for those looking to get a tan, taking a trip down the Bow does require a little prep work.

Before you pack your bags, you’ll need to know what you’re sailing in, any raft entry points, and what to bring to ensure a safe and exciting adventure.

Raft Rentals

Unless you’ve already got a canoe, kayak, or raft made from polyester, nylon, or coated with synthetic rubber, you’re going to need to buy or rent one.

Luckily, because an air mattress or a giant inflatable swan will not get you from point A to point B, there are several companies that will let you borrow what works.

From life jackets and boats to paddles, here are businesses with Bow-friendly rentals:

The Paddle Station

Where: 5227 – 13th Ave. NW, Calgary

Lazy Day Raft Rentals

Where: 720 – 3rd St. NW, Calgary

Sports Rent

Where: 4424 16th Ave. NW, Calgary

What to bring

Ready to climb aboard your raft? Don’t forget a waterproof bag of essentials.

While you’ll be surrounded by H20, be sure to bring some that you can drink, in addition to sunscreen, your phone, wallet, keys, and spare clothes.

Emergency items, including a whistle, throw bag with rope, and an umbrella or tarp, could also come in handy.

If you’d like a complete list, Sports Rent has a fantastic checklist that should be referred to before setting sail.

Where to enter

Once you’re all packed and ready to go, you’ll need to find an access point, but don’t stress.

If this is your first time or if you’re just trying something new, the City of Calgary has created a fantastic map highlighting the best points to get in and out of the water safely.

Here are just a few of the most popular spots to begin your journey:

Carburn Park

Where: 67 Riverview Dr. SE, Calgary

Edworthy Park

Where: 5050 Spruce Dr. SW, Calgary

Stanley Park

Where: 4011 1a St. SW, Calgary

Sue Higgins Park

Where: Southland Drive SE and Deerfoot Trail, Calgary

Safety

Last, but certainly not least, please be cautious. You will not get far unless you’re following the rules, so please take note of the following:

According to the city, alcohol is not permitted, so leave your White Claws, craft beers and ciders at home.

Second, all passengers must wear a life jacket while on the Bow River, and are not allowed to litter or urinate while in public.

Have any more questions about the dos and don’ts of the Bow River? Check out the City of Calgary website for more information.

It’s going to be a long, hot summer, Calgary, so get ready and stay ready.

You’re going to have a blast.
