Here’s what’s open and closed in Calgary on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

24 September 20252 Mins Read

The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is on Sept. 30 in Canada. Originally marking Orange Shirt Day, it was designated as a federal statutory holiday in 2021, honouring the children and survivors of the Government of Canada’s enforced residential school system.

The Alberta government has not designated Sept. 30 a provincial holiday, which leaves the decision to employers whether or not to grant the day off. Despite not being a statutory holiday in Alberta, the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is commemorated by the provincial government as a direct response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Calls to Action.

If you don’t have the day off from work on Sept. 30, you can still honour the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation with Indigenous-led events in Calgary.

A number of businesses, services and other retail storefronts will also be closed for the national holiday. Here’s what to know heading into Sept. 30 in Calgary, Alta.
