Here’s when the world’s longest skating trail opens for the season in B.C.

25 December 20253 Mins Read

Did you know that the world’s longest skating path is right here in B.C.? Running the entirety of Lake Windermere, the Lake Windermere Whiteway offers visitors a “pure Canadian pond skating experience,” including memorable cross-country skiing in addition to skating!

World’s longest skating path

Created nearly 20 years ago by the Toby Creek Nordic Ski Club, the impressive whiteway stretches 34 kilometres long, making it the longest of its kind in the world. The ski club maintains the groomed trail and is part of the extensive mountain and creekside trail system at Panorama Mountain Resort.

Believe it or not, the track is long enough to connect the towns of Invermere and Windermere!

According to its website, the Whiteway has tracks for both classic cross-country and skate skiing, as well as a cleared ice skating track. Visitors can start at Kinsmen Beach, which also has a small skating rink with benches and a firepit, or opt to start at the Invermere Bay Condos or Windermere Beach.

The Whiteway is also groomed for fatbiking and walking, if either sounds like a more appealing way to explore the area.

No matter how you choose to enjoy it, you’ll be surrounded by breathtaking mountain scenery, with close access to Radium and Fairmont Hot Springs.

How much does it cost to visit?

Ready to glide along the world-famous path? Visitors are encouraged to check the ski club’s socials the morning of their planned visit.

Columbia Valley passes for the 2025/2026 ski season are available online for $322 per adult; otherwise, it’s just $5 for a day pass for the Whiteway, once open. Season passes get you unlimited access to the Whiteway, trails at Nipika Mountain Resort, nordic trails at Panorama Mountain Resort, and Lillian Lake.

When does the Whiteway open?

According to Toby Creek Nordic Ski Club, the Lake Windermere Whiteway will officially open for the season on DATE.

If you’re looking for even more thrilling winter adventures to bookmark, there’s a two-day cross-country ski race open to all skill levels that’s coming to Nipika Panorama Toby Creek from Jan. 24 to 25, 2026.

Happy adventuring.

How to get there: Drive 11 hours from Vancouver to Invermere via the Crowsnest Highway/BC-3 E.
