Hit isekai anime is changing production studio again ahead of season 4’s confirmed release

KonoSuba: God’s Blessing on This Wonderful World is one of the most popular isekai anime. Credited with opening the floodgates for the popularity of the genre along with other now-iconic works, KonoSuba is beloved because of its relentless ability to poke fun at itself and genre tropes. However, the series is also famous for being juggled among different production studios, and season 4 is no exception.

On July 26, it was announced through the series’ official website that season 4 of KonoSuba will officially air in 2027. This is great news for fans, but it also came with the detail that production will switch from studio Drive, responsible for season 3, to Studio ENGI. This marks the fourth animation studio to work on the property, after Studio Deen authored the first two seasons, while J.C. Staff animated the movie KonoSuba: God’s Blessing on This Wonderful World! Legend of Crimson.

While it’s not unheard of for an anime to change production studio between seasons, it’s also not an uncommon occurrence. Usually, consistency is considered a plus: Anime like Jujutsu Kaisen or My Hero Academia let their production studios (Mappa and Bones, respectively) showcase an artistic vision that developed over the years. However, shows like Vinland Saga and Attack on Titan proved that an anime can change production studios without losing quality.

In KonoSuba‘s case, this latest change is probably motivated by the fact that ENGI is owned by Kadokawa, the publisher that holds the series’ IP. The Japanese media colossus is expanding on all fronts, which likely includes handling the production of its IPs in-house. ENGI is a relatively new studio, and KonoSuba is the biggest IP in its portfolio. Season 4 will be a real testing ground for the team. Luckily, Takaomi Kanasaki, who directed the first season, will be back for season 4. If that name doesn’t ring a bell, he also worked on the absolute anime gem Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust.

Hopefully, KonoSuba fans won’t have to wait too far into 2027 to see the hijinks of Kazuma, Aqua, Megumin, and Darkness coming back to the screen.
