'Home Improvement' Star Sentenced to 1 Year in Jail

One Home Improvement star is in hot water once again—and this time, he’s headed behind bars.

Zachery Ty Bryan was sentenced to 16 months in county jail after pleading guilty in connection to a 2024 DUI arrest. According to a TMZ article shared on Monday, February 23, Bryan admitted during an arraignment hearing to driving under the influence and acknowledged an enhancement for having a blood alcohol content of 0.15% or higher—which, if you weren’t aware, is nearly double the legal limit of 0.08%.

Court docs obtained by the outlet show Bryan, 44, also admitted to having two prior DUI convictions. With multiple offenses on his record, the judge denied probation and handed down the 16-month sentence, granting him credit for 57 days already served. The records indicate that if Bryan were to face a fourth DUI conviction in the future, the penalties would be more severe.

Bryan was originally arrested by La Quinta Police in 2024 for driving under the influence with three or more priors. In 2020 he was arrested following an argument with his then-partner, Johnnie Faye Cartwright. He was charged with felony strangulation, fourth-degree assault and interfering with making a police report, later pleading guilty to two misdemeanor domestic violence charges. He served seven days in jail and was placed on 36 months of probation. Around that same time, The Hollywood Reporter detailed allegations that Bryan was involved in an agriculture tech startup scheme in which he allegedly accepted nearly $50,000 in investments under “fraudulent circumstances.”

The arrests continued. In 2023, he faced charges including felony assault, robbery and harassment. In 2024, he was arrested twice on DUI-related charges. Then in January 2025, he was arrested in South Carolina on second-degree domestic violence charges, with reports alleging he “choked” Cartwright and “punched her in the head” Months earlier, he had also been taken into custody in Oregon for allegedly violating probation tied to a prior domestic violence conviction.

Bryan was once known for his role as Brad Taylor on the hit ’90s sitcom, which starred Tim Allen. 

Reps for Bryan have not responded to Parade’s request for comment at this time.
