Funding strengthens access to safe housing, employment & support services for migrants building lives in New York

The Hotel Association of New York City Foundation (HANYC Foundation), the philanthropic arm of the Hotel Association of NYC, today announced a $15,000 grant to the Harlem-based non-profit, Afrikana, to assist its mission providing migrants with safe housing and employment in New York City.

The funding will support Afrikana’s daily efforts uplifting migrants of Black, Muslim, and Arab heritage and ensure they have access to the shelter, workforce, and benefits assistance they need to survive and thrive as members of the New York City community. The HANYC Foundation and Afrikana are united by a shared commitment to ensuring migrants and their families are treated with dignity, compassion, and respect as they pursue the American dream.

“It’s critical that we support the safety of our newest New Yorkers,” said Heather Davis, Chair of the Hotel Association of New York City Foundation and Senior Vice President of Operations at Aimbridge Hospitality. “New York City has always been shaped by people coming in and creating something new. When new arrivals have access to stable housing and meaningful work, it strengthens communities and supports the local economy. Our industry is about welcoming people and helping them find their footing, and Afrikana is doing that work every day. We’re proud to support their efforts.”

The HANYC Foundation works with philanthropic and civic partners to address critical challenges facing New York City—including public safety, sanitation, and immigration—while reinforcing the hospitality industry’s role as a civic leader in supporting a safe and thriving city. Through targeted grants and collaboration, the Foundation aligns industry resources with initiatives designed to deliver measurable impact across the five boroughs.

“It is a joy to be in partnership with the HANYC Foundation and see the hospitality industry supporting New York’s migrant community during a crucial time,” says Adama Bah, Executive Director of Afrikana. “As someone who came through the immigration system myself and now helps others, I can attest that the road is particularly challenging for Black and Muslim migrants. This grant will allow our organization to connect people with the essential resources they need to not just survive in New York, but truly belong here.”
