Hotel Demand May Benefit as 2026 Holidays Create More Long Weekend

17 September 20264 Mins Read

In Brief: Calendar changes in the fourth quarter of 2026 are expected to support hotel travel demand by placing several holidays on Fridays and Halloween on a Saturday, while booking patterns are likely to remain short-term and weather could affect regional performance.

Holiday calendar expected to support travel

Hotel operators and analysts expect calendar shifts in the fourth quarter of 2026 to provide support for leisure and business travel demand. Several major December and early January holidays will fall on Fridays, giving travelers opportunities to take extended weekends without using as many vacation days.

The first day of Hanukkah, Christmas and New Year’s Day are all scheduled for Fridays. Michelle Westbrook, vice president of revenue management at Island Hospitality Management, said the timing should be positive for demand because it allows travelers to combine time off with three-day weekends.

Westbrook said holiday travel demand in 2025 began to weaken earlier because Christmas Eve fell midweek. With the 2026 holidays occurring later in the week, she expects that effect to be less pronounced.

Didio Pequeno, director of hospitality market analytics for the Northeast and Midwest at CoStar, said the change in New Year’s timing could be especially important. New Year’s Eve will move from a Wednesday in 2025 to a Thursday in 2026, making it easier for some travelers to extend celebrations into a long weekend.

Pequeno said travelers may still seek end-of-year trips despite political uncertainty and the conflict in Iran. He also cited events during 2026, including the FIFA World Cup and America 250 commemorations, as factors that could influence travel patterns.

New York and historic cities could see demand

New York City is expected to remain a major destination for New Year’s travel because of the annual Times Square ball drop. Pequeno said the city could benefit from the additional weekend travel opportunity created by the Thursday New Year’s Eve.

Other cities may also see demand connected to the United States’ 250th anniversary celebrations. Philadelphia, Boston and Washington, D.C., could attract travelers in the final days of 2026 because of their historical connections to the country’s founding.

The calendar’s effect will differ by market. Cities with major events, established holiday traditions or a large base of leisure visitors may receive more benefit than markets that depend primarily on business travel.

October gains a Saturday while November loses one

October will have one more Saturday in 2026 than it did in the prior year, while November will have one fewer. The added October Saturday will be Halloween, which falls on Oct. 31.

Westbrook said Halloween occurring on a weekend could limit the disruption often seen when the holiday falls during the workweek. A midweek Halloween can reduce business travel and group activity, while a Saturday observance may allow hotels to capture leisure demand without affecting weekday corporate and group bookings as much.

Pequeno said an additional October weekend day can be meaningful, particularly in markets such as New York City, where October is generally a stronger travel month than November. The gain is expected to offset some of the impact from November having one fewer Saturday.

Westbrook said November will still include four weekends and should not see a major effect from the missing weekend day. She added that a Saturday Halloween allows November to begin without travel shifts associated with a midweek holiday.

Late bookings and weather remain key factors

Hotel booking windows have remained short in 2026, a pattern that industry participants expect to continue during the fourth quarter. Pequeno said travelers increasingly book closer to their departure dates.

Island Hospitality Management generally begins seeing holiday reservations about 45 days before a holiday, according to Westbrook. The largest booking increases typically occur within the final two to four weeks before the travel period.

Weather remains an important uncertainty for holiday demand. Winter storms and snow can reduce travel in northern markets, while potentially directing travelers toward warmer destinations in states such as South Carolina, Florida and Georgia.

Westbrook said the company is cautiously optimistic after stronger second- and third-quarter results. She said the company plans to adjust pricing and inventory strategies based on demand conditions, protecting average daily rates where demand is strong and responding earlier in markets where booking pace is weaker.
