How to solve the scarecrow puzzle in Silent Hill f

25 September 20257 Mins Read

One of Silent Hill f‘s more perplexing puzzles is the Field puzzle (also known as the scarecrow puzzle), which presents Hinako with a series of clues and a farm full of spooky scarecrows. It’s basically Silent Hill f‘s version of the classic Lost Woods puzzle from The Legend of Zelda series, trapping Hinako in an endless walk through a foggy field until she picks the correct scarecrow.

In this guide, we’ll explain how to solve Silent Hill f‘s scarecrow puzzle and avoid death by high-school-student-scarecrow monsters (and to acquire the Acupuncture Specialist achievement/trophy, which requires solving the puzzle without any mistakes).

The Silent Hill f scarecrow puzzle, explained

Hinako will encounter a series of scarecrows in groups. The scarecrow that actually resembles a scarecrow holds a note that’s meant to be a clue to the puzzle, and the first has a sickle to use as a weapon. The sickle breaks easily, and the first scarecrow is the only one with a weapon for you, so don’t rely on it too much unless you’ve got a toolkit on hand. Find the correct scarecrow, extract the nail within, and the scarecrow will point you to Hinako’s next destination (which is also indicated by a gust of wind and flying grass). Head in the wrong direction, though, and Hinako will loop back to the section of the field she was just in. If you pick the wrong scarecrow or take too long to make a choice, one of them comes to life and attacks Hinako.

Like all puzzles in Silent Hill f, there are three difficulty variations: Story, Hard, and Lost in the Fog. We break up the puzzle solutions by difficulty below.

Silent Hill f scarecrow puzzle solution (story)

Story difficulty’s key is in the first question for every riddle, “Who are you?” The solution is to find the scarecrow that resembles Hinako in each area, and the way to do that is by identifying the one with a similar hairstyle: a bobbed cut that stops about halfway down the neck.

Scarecrow #1: Who are you? Why do you have to be different than everyone else? Freak.

Pick the female scarecrow with the bobbed hair who’s holding a long, curved blade behind her.

Scarecrow #2: Who are you? Honestly. You’re helpless without me.

The correct one this time is the female scarecrow with no weapon in her hands.

Scarecrow #3: Who are you? I’ll be your friend. Otherwise, you’d be so miserably alone.

This one is the female scarecrow bending over backwards, with a golden bird pinned to her jacket.

Scarecrow #4: Who are you? Tell me truly, you two aren’t anything more than friends, right? I’ve always been watching when you weren’t looking, you know.

The short-haired female scarecrow with one hand pointing left and the other pointing behind her to a long-haired scarecrow is the correct one.

Scarecrow #5: Who are you? You. Yes, you.

Choose the female scarecrow with bobbed hair, looking at the ground, with both hands held out to the side and palms facing down.

Silent Hill f scarecrow puzzle solution (hard)

Scarecrow #1: Can you even imagine how I feel? I’ll put on my polite smile for now.

Look for this smiling, sickle-wielding female scarecrow with her head cocked backward who is to the left when facing the clue scarecrow. Remove the nail from her body, and you’ll receive a flash card that reads, “It’s okay.” “You don’t have to be afraid anymore.”

Scarecrow #2: Can you even imagine how I feel? What it’s like to have been deceived by you for so long?

Look for the female scarecrow who has been stabbed in the back and is looking down at the ground. Remove the nail from her body, and you’ll receive a flash card that reads, “That’s what I said to you, when I saw you so scared.”

Scarecrow #3: Can you even imagine how I feel? He never once looked at me the way he looked at you. Not once.

Look for this sullen-faced female scarecrow who does not have weapons and is looking backward toward the other scarecrows. She has a nail in her belly button and is on the left side when facing the clue scarecrow. Remove the nail from her body, and you’ll receive a flash card that reads, “I wonder why I called you over.”

Scarecrow #4: Can you even imagine how I feel? You’ve always been such an eyesore.

Look for this sullen-faced female scarecrow with no weapons and outstretched arms and is looking to her right. She’s on the right side when facing the clue scarecrow. Remove the nail from her body, and you’ll receive a flash card that reads, “I could’ve just lied to you. Told you to go any which way.”

Scarecrow #5: Can you even imagine how I feel? You hurt me, and even hurt him, too. Do you know how it feels to force a smile when I’m staring at that disgusting face of yours?!

Look for this female scarecrow who has a sickle in her back and is looking down at the ground with her arms outstretched. Remove the nail from her body, and you’ll receive a flash card that reads, “I could’ve just lied to you. Told you to go any which way.”

Having completed the Field puzzle, you can move on to Rinko’s house.

Look for this female scarecrow with its head twisted upside down. Remove the nail from her body, and you’ll receive a revealing article about Ebisugaoka.

Scarecrow #2: It’s your funeral today. Good riddance. It feels as though I finally got this painful burden off my chest.

Scarecrow #3: It’s your funeral today. You hurt him, and now you’re leaving him behind. I hope you suffer for what you’ve done.

Look for this female scarecrow with its head twisted upside down. (It looks just like the first one.) Remove the nail from her body, and you’ll receive a revealing article about Ebisugaoka.

Scarecrow #4: It’s your funeral today. You were such a thorn in my side. Always getting between me and him.

Look for this smiling female scarecrow with her head cocked backward and looking to its right. Remove the nail from her body, and you’ll receive a revealing article about Ebisugaoka.

Scarecrow #5: It’s your funeral today. Goodbye, and don’t ever show your face again. Go do your own thing, just like you always have.

In a slight twist, you’ll need to look for a series of scarecrows that are lying on the ground, not standing upright. Each scarecrow in this sequence has an arm outstretched that points to the next, ultimately pointing to a lone female scarecrow standing in a field.
