How to suck up and move water in Pokémon Pokopia

19 March 20264 Mins Read

You’ll want to suck up the water and move it in Pokémon Pokopia in order to make more complex designs. There are a few different liquids you can use to decorate, like lava and hot-spring water, but to actually move those liquids around, you’ll need to progress in the story a bit.

Several Pokémon also require specific types of liquids for their habitats, so while you can place their other required items around their respective body of water, you can instead move their body of water to really elevate your island.

Below we explain how to unlock waterscaping (the ability to suck up and spit out water) in Pokopia, and we list the various types of liquids you can use to decorate.

How to unlock waterscaping in Pokopia

In order to unlock the ability to suck up and spit out water in Pokopia, you’ll need to accept a specific request from Piplup, when it’s saying “Let’s go together!” as it walks around Bleak Beach.

To get to this request, we did the following:

We also had the Rocky Ridges “Time to Party!” important request finished, as well as access to the fourth area, though we hadn’t started any of the story there yet. If you did the above two prerequisites and this request isn’t showing up for you, try progressing a bit more in the story.

After talking to Piplup again, it’ll lead you to an area near the gate to Bleak Beach, noting that it wants to make a waterfall. They’ll ask you to bring in a Paldean Wooper to learn how to store water in your body, using a “marshy tall grass” habitat, which you can make from the muddy water area around the corner from Piplup’s waterfall spot. Once Wooper moves in, they’ll want three tomatoes, so fork those over and they’ll teach you how to suck up liquid.

To suck up water, you’ll just need to press ZR when you’re holding down Y. Keep in mind that you can also hold ZL while you’re full of liquid to control the height and water level you’re spitting out at. If you accidentally make a hole in your ocean, you can fix it by adjusting the water level when you spit water back out.

How to make different types of water in Pokopia

With your newfound inhaling ability, you can now suck up any type of liquid you find around the island, including lava. However, if you want to place a liquid, and you have no source around you, don’t fret. The bottled drinks you get from powered vending machines will let you spit out different types of liquid:

  • Fresh water: water
  • Soda pop: seawater
  • Moomoo milk coffee: muddy water
  • Roserade tea: hot-spring water
  • Chili sauce: lava

Each vending machine only grants you one drink per day, and based on our testing, the drink it gives you is random. There are several vending machines scattered around Bleak Beach (with a few on the abandoned S.S. Anne), so you should power these up and make sure to visit them every day to stockpile your liquids. Notably, fresh water is also used for making soup, so you’ll want extras of that especially.

You’ll find more vending machines as you progress in the game, and each Poké Mart you build will also come equipped with a vending machine inside.

If you’re starting out in Pokémon Pokopia, we have guides to help you spruce up your island. We have both a Pokédex and Habitat Dex to assist in figuring out what can spawn where, and what you need to build to summon your favorite creatures. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, you can also check out our beginner’s guide for some early tips and tricks to help smooth out your journey.

We also have walkthroughs for the important requests that progress the story: “Yawn up a Storm!,” “Brighten Things Up!,” “Time to Party!,” and “Build the Huge Building!” If you’re looking to play with friends, know that there are restrictions for the regular Pokopia multiplayer and for the GameShare version.
