Officers are unique characters in Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced that can improve the Jackdaw’s efficiency. While you can upgrade the ship’s weapons and defenses by paying a visit to the harbourmaster and spending a good amount of gold, there are some traits that only officers offer.
To conquer the seas and fight the Templars, you must prepare your crew by learning how to unlock all the officers in Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced.

How to unlock every officer in Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced
There are five officers in Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, four of them tied to the main story and one is unlocked after completing part of a side quest. The following section contains light spoilers as we go through where and how you can find each one of these characters. Here are all of the officers and when you unlock them:
- Adéwalé: The Treasure Fleet (Sequence 2)
- Lucy Baldwin: A Proper Shipwright (Sequence 4)
- The Padre: A Second Chance (Sequence 4)
- Tobias “Deadman” Smith: A World Without Gold — It’s a Start (Sequence 11)
- Anne Bonny: Everything is Permitted (Sequence 11)
Although three of the officers (Lucy Baldin, The Padre, and Tobias “Deadman” Smith) have their own quest lines, you don’t need to complete them to unlock these special crew members. All quests connected to them are in the “Officers” tab, which you can see in the Map menu. Below, you’ll find how to unlock each officer and their skills.
Adéwalé
- Unlock quest: The Treasure Fleet (Sequence 2)
During “The Treasure Fleet” main quest, you meet Adéwalé, who eventually becomes the Jackdaw’s quartermaster. He and Edward are prisoners on a Spanish ship, but Adéwalé helps Ed to escape, and they both take the ship. Although Adéwalé is a key figure throughout the campaign, as quartermaster, he doesn’t offer the Jackdaw any skills or perks.
Lucy Baldwin
- Unlock quest: A Proper Shipwright (Sequence 4)
The quest to unlock Lucy becomes available after Adéwalé tells Edward about her once you complete the “This Old Cove” main quest. You will find the Jackdaw’s shipwright as a prisoner on a ship in a British fleet, which is located near the Salt Key Bank. Completing the “A Proper Shipwright” quest will unlock her as an officer, but Lucy’s quest line goes beyond that, leading to some family issues being solved.
As a shipwright, Lucy gives you the ability to greatly reduce damage from an attack if you brace just as it hits the ship.
The Padre
- Unlock quest: A Second Chance (Sequence 4)
You can start the quest to unlock the master-at-arms, the Padre, as soon as you have finished the main mission, “This Old Cove.” Described by Adéwalé as a “real terror of the seas,” Abel Galvão — a.k.a. the Padre — has abandoned his past life to devote himself to his religion. However, by the end of the “A Second Chance” side quest, he will agree to be part of the Jackdaw. You can find him in Caracol, a small village on the southeast side of the map.
As a master-at-arms, the Padre will participate in fights during boarding or fort battles, and he also grants you the ability to ram-dash with the Jackdaw. When using this ability, you speed up for a short period, always moving forward to hit other ships.
Tobias “Deadman” Smith
- Unlock quest: A World Without Gold – It’s a Start (Sequence 11)
Deadman is going to be Jackdaw’s master gunner, but only if you take the time to play through the “A World Without Gold” quest line. This is a late-game side mission with multiple secondary objectives that only becomes available after the “Everything is Permitted” main quest. Finish the initial missions until you eventually find Deadman after fighting a whole British fleet commanded by the HMS Demolition. This is a difficult fight, so be sure to upgrade your ship before committing to it.
Once you’re back to Great Inagua during the “It’s a Start” secondary objective, you will talk to Tobias and recruit him. Deadman’s officer ability makes your ship’s broadside cannons fire an extra salvo, causing much more damage to enemies.
Anne Bonny
- Unlock quest: Everything is Permitted (Sequence 11)
Anne Bonny becomes the Jackdaw’s quartermaster later in the game, after you have completed the “Everything is Permitted” main quest. Edward is in need of someone strong and capable to manage his crew, and there’s no one better than Anne, who had to handle drunk pirates for many years at her tavern. Anne doesn’t have an officer ability.
