A quiet lull in awards season (‘tis the other season) approaches before the chaos of the new year, but in the background, several important bodies continue to make moves. Tomorrow, the Producers Guild of America Awards voting opens, which member and The Ringer’s Sean Fennessey told us last year is one of the best predictors of the Oscars. (We already have the PGA’s documentary nominees, which includes ’s Piazza Grande Award winner and Indie Spirits nominee Gaucho Gaucho.) Additionally, next Monday BAFTA voting closes for the acting categories; its HQ has a fun list of the past twenty years of Leading and Supporting Actress winners, which reveals how often they differ from US awards.
In the meantime, Léo has collected the Oscar shortlists for the ten categories announced today, and you can deep dive into the 2025 CCA nominations with André’s super-detailed list. Allie’s listed the African American Film Critics Association’s complete awards for 2024, which highlights some underrated gems such as Sundance stunners Exhibiting Forgiveness and Daughters.
Speaking of Sundance, though I can’t really wrap my head around 2025 cinema just yet, the festival where the next awards season starts to really germinate has just announced its lineup, gathered here by Sean Liu; Jennifer Lopez in Kiss of the Spider Woman and Ben Whishaw playing Peter Hujar are my current most anticipated. Lastly for this week, to celebrate the CCA’s 30th birthday, and completely, entirely unrelated to the fact that I am also turning 30 next year (did you know?), may I present Vanina’s fantastic list of films about Feeling Lost in Your 30s. You (well, I) can start with a well-timed rewatch of The Holiday.
