Italian subs just hit different during the summer months. When you’re bouncing between the beach, the pool, outdoor activities or a quick park picnic, there’s nothing that satisfies quite like a cold Italian hoagie packed with layers of deli meats, cheese, crisp lettuce and tangy dressing. It’s the kind of meal that tastes even better with sandy feet and an ocean breeze.
Lately on social media, you can’t scroll five posts without seeing someone recreate their own version Jersey Mike’s famous “sub in a tub,” so you know as the “Salami Mami” as my friends like to call me, I had to dig my heels into this one and recreate it at home for my family using my favorite premium deli meats from Dietz & Watson. Not only was it incredibly easy and fun to make, but I knew using high-quality ingredients, especially the meats and dressing, took the tub from great to amazing.
If you’ve been wanting to try your own copycat “sub in a tub,” love the idea of a breadless sandwich bowl, or are simply looking for an easy, flavor-packed lunch to add to your weekly rotation, keep reading along because this recipe is definitely a trend I’d like to keep around.

It’s exactly what it sounds like: all the best parts of an Italian sub, minus the bread, but packed artfully in a bowl or container to take on the go.
Instead of piling everything onto a roll, you layer thinly shredded lettuce with sliced Italian hoagie deli meats, provolone cheese, tomatoes, onions, banana peppers, pickles, oregano and a flavorful hoagie dressing. The result is a salad that’s loaded with all the flavors of an Italian hoagie while being naturally gluten free and perfect for anyone looking for an easy keto-friendly lunch or breadless sandwich bowl.

The Secret to the Flavor? Dietz & Watson Hoagie Dressing

The beauty of a great Italian sandwich is that the ingredients do the heavy lifting but the dressing is what brings everything together.
While you can absolutely make your own sub dressing with olive oil, vinegar and spices, I was thrilled to skip the measuring and reached straight for Dietz & Watson Hoagie Dressing. It’s the ultimate shortcut to authentic deli flavor, combining oil, vinegar, herbs and seasonings into one perfectly balanced bottle.
One drizzle over the top and every bite was better than the last.

To build, I added shredded iceberg lettuce to the bottom of a to-go container and layered on all the hoagie ingredients in even rows. I seasoned it all with freshly cracked black pepper, salt and oregano for the complete deli-style experience and topped the whole bowl with Dietz & Watson Hoagie Dressing, which brought it all together.

My Honest Review: Does It Actually Taste Like the Real Thing?
This recipe is truly one of the best things I’ve eaten all season.
Premium deli meats, provolone, crisp lettuce, crunchy pickles, tangy peppers and the flavorful Dietz & Watson Hoagie Dressing? That’s a combination that’s always going to be perfect in my book.
The dressing ties everything together beautifully, and using several varieties of Dietz & Watson meats gives every bite the classic Italian hoagie flavor you’d expect from such a quality brand.
Even better, these bowls hold up surprisingly well in the refrigerator, making them perfect for packing ahead for beach days, office lunches, road trips or anytime you need a quick grab-and-go meal.

Pro Tips for Meal Prepping Your Copycat ‘Sub in a Tub’
- Prep individual portions. Assemble each serving in its own container so you can grab one on your way out the door.
- Keep everything roughly the same size. Chopping the ingredients into similar-sized pieces means every forkful gets the perfect mix of meat, cheese, lettuce and toppings.
- Shred the lettuce extra thin. Just like the best delis do, finely shredded lettuce creates the perfect texture and helps the dressing coat every bite evenly.
- Add the dressing just before serving. If you’re making these ahead, pack the Dietz & Watson Hoagie Dressing separately and drizzle it on when you’re ready to eat for the freshest texture.
