On March 6, 1968, the final episode of a pioneering science-fiction television show aired. Lost in Space only aired for three seasons, but it has remained a series that fans talk about all these decades later.
In fact, one line from the show is still heard from time to time: “Danger, Will Robinson, danger, danger!” People who toss out the iconic line may not even remember its origins, but it’s a caution initially doled out by a robot to the young Will Robinson that has stood the test of time.
The original Lost in Space aired from 1965 to 1968, for a total of 84 episodes. The series finale was titled “Junkyard in Space,” and the synopsis for the episode teased, “With the Robinsons running out of food, Dr. Smith trades the ship and the Robot to a junk man for food.”
Primary cast members of Lost in Space included Guy Williams as Dr. John Robinson, June Lockhart as Maureen Robinson, and Bill Mumy as Will Robinson. Additional standouts included Angela Cartwright, who played Penny Robinson, Marta Kristen as Judy Robinson, Mark Goddard, who played Major Don West, and Jonathan Harris, who portrayed Dr. Zachary Smith.
Kristen told Fox News in November 2021 that she “vividly” remembered learning the show was canceled. “I was at my house and I received a phone call. I learned it was canceled. I was speechless. No one really knew why.”
She added, “Later on, we found out that it was possibly Irwin’s battle with CBS at the time. He wasn’t giving the scripts that CBS demanded.” The comment was a reference to Irwin Allen, the creator and one of the writers of Lost in Space.
Kristen also reflected on how the cast felt like family to her. She admitted that revisiting some memories were too emotional for her. Despite that, she praised several of her Lost in Space co-stars.
Harris “taught me the importance of having the utmost respect for everyone on set, cast and crew,” Kristen explained. She continued, “And of course, Bill and Angela were just the sweetest.”
In addition, she admitted, she thought Goddard was “just hilarious.” Kristen revealed, “He makes me laugh until I can’t breathe. It’s just a wicked sense of humor. I couldn’t have asked for a better cast.”
