One of my favorite bands of the 1990s was Counting Crows, and anytime I hear their music, it’s like being transported back to a simpler time. “A Long December,” “Hanginaround,” “Mr. Jones,” and “Round Here” were true staples of my high school days.
The band recently kicked off a 2025 tour, and fans who attended their concert in Boston at MGM Music Hall at Fenway on Thursday, June 26, got a real treat when they strayed away from their usual set list and performed a cover of Taylor Swift‘s “the 1.”
Lead singer Adam Duritz played the tune in true Swift fashion… singing while playing the piano.
A video of the performance was shared on TikTok by @corwinwickersham, who captioned the clip with, “Ok… @Counting Crows with a beautiful cover of Taylor Swift’s “the 1” last night in Boston. First time seeing them (finally), and while this was a fun little surprise, they delivered across the board, performing a stellar set of all the hits to a very sold-out, very happy crowd at @MGMMusicHallAtFenway.”

Wow. It’s pretty safe to say that Swift would totally approve of this rendition of her hit tune.
People who viewed the clip loved the band’s version as well. One person paid Swift a huge compliment, saying, “It’s a testament to her songwriting that Counting Crows can sing this and make it sound like they conceived it. Like Whitney singing Dolly and us never realizing for YEARS it wasn’t Whitney’s song… powerful writing transcends artists and genres.”
It’s so true!
Another fan simply stated, “Beautiful,” and someone who attended one of their other shows noted, “They played this in MI too 💙”

Counting Crows has an extremely packed tour schedule from now into November, so odds are good they’re playing in a city near you. If you happen to score tickets, you’re guaranteed to have a memory to last a lifetime.
Hmm. Wouldn’t it be cool if instead of just playing a cover, Swift stopped by one of their shows for an epic duet? We probably shouldn’t hold our breaths, but it sure is fun to consider.
