IHG Hotels & Resorts has announced the development of the Regent Karuizawa Resort, marking the Regent brand’s first resort location in Japan. The new property, set to open in 2028, will be located in the historic town of Karuizawa, approximately one hour from Tokyo by Shinkansen.

The Regent Karuizawa will feature 58 keys, offering a mix of rooms and villas. Japanese architect Kengo Kuma designs the resort, which will be situated in a forested area with views of Mount Asama. The development aims to cater to guests seeking a tranquil retreat, incorporating elements such as hot springs.

The resort will feature various amenities, including a specialty restaurant with valley views, multiple dining and bar options, meeting spaces, a spa, an onsen, and a gym. These facilities are intended to provide a comprehensive experience for visitors.

Karuizawa is known for its natural beauty and year-round attractions, including scenic waterfalls, ski resorts, golf courses, and upscale shopping. The town has seen a 30% increase in inbound travel since 2019, highlighting its growing appeal to international travelers.

The Regent Karuizawa will join IHG’s existing Hotel Indigo Karuizawa in the Nagano Prefecture, expanding the company’s presence in the region. This development is part of IHG’s broader strategy to grow its luxury and upper luxury portfolio in Japan. Currently, IHG operates 55 hotels across 10 brands in the country, with 17 additional properties in the pipeline.

The Regent Karuizawa will be the second Regent property in Japan, following the anticipated opening of Regent Kyoto Hotel earlier in 2028.
