If you’re one of those people who needs something sweet after lunch and dinner (okay, and sometimes breakfast), I see you. I am you!
While I’ve spent more days than I’d like to admit reaching for a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup after mealtimes, I’m well aware that this isn’t the best decision from a health perspective. In addition to a high saturated fat content, a package of two Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups contains a whopping 21 grams of added sugar. That’s nearly half of the recommended daily allotment. Because I know too much sugar is associated with everything from type 2 Diabetes to heart disease and obesity, I do my very best to keep my sugar intake under control.

I’ve dabbled in traditional candy alternatives like this incredible “healthy” Snickers bar. But recently, I’ve become obsessed with a new chocolate bar that I’m begging everyone to try.

The ‘Healthy’ Chocolate Bar I’m Begging Everyone to Try
If you have a sweet tooth like me and are looking for a healthy alternative, consider trying Hu Kitchen’s Salty Dark Chocolate Bar. While this is my favorite, it’s worth noting that none of their dark chocolate bars contain any refined sugar, cane sugar, sugar alcohols, dairy, palm oil, gluten or soy. As for what they’re sweetened with, the majority of Hu’s chocolate bars have less than 8 grams of unrefined coconut sugar per serving.

The ingredients list is short and sweet, too: it’s just organic fairtrade cacao, organic fairtrade unrefined coconut sugar, organic fairtrade cocoa butter and sea sea salt.
Here’s the nutritional breakdown per half bar:
- 14g total fat (8g saturated fat)
- 100mg sodium
- 3g fiber
- 3g protein
- 7g total sugar (6g added sugar)
These bars also include .5mcg vitamin D, 21mg calcium, 3mg iron and 260mg potassium—so they have some essential vitamins and minerals, too.
I will say Hu Kitchen’s chocolate is very much a dark chocolate bar, so it might not be for everyone. But compared to the massive blood sugar spike I get every time I eat an (admittedly delicious) Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup, this one gives me so much more sustained energy throughout the day while also satisfying my sugar craving. Don’t knock it ’til you’ve tried it!
