Rhaenyra Targaryen is just about fed up. The castle she finally conquered at the start of House of the Dragon season 3 has become more like a prison where she’s forced to babysit her political rivals, hide from her enemies, and field complaints from the local commonfolk while they insult her behind her back. But Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) knows she was born for more than this. She was meant for greatness — a belief that was passed down by her father and then reinforced by a witchy prophecy seen by her husband/uncle Daemon (Matt Smith).

So when all that simmering conflict finally comes to a head in House of the Dragon‘s season 3 finale, Queen Rhaenyra suits up for war and announces to her soldiers: “I am The Prince That Was Promised!”
It’s a powerful moment charged with tragic irony (Game of Thrones fans know the true identity of Azor Ahai, and book readers know how Rhaenyra’s story will end), but it also raises another question: Does anyone else in that scene even know what Rhaenyra is talking about?
As we learned in House of the Dragon season 1, The Prince That Was Promised is a secret prophecy passed down from one Targaryen king to the next. Aegon the Conqueror knew that a savior from his bloodline would eventually save Westeros from an even greater threat in the form of the White Walkers, and shared that information with his bloodline. (The equivalent Azor Ahai myth is more well-known in Essos, while a handful of maesters studying old Valyrian texts may have also come across this information over the ages, but that’s about it in terms of who knows the prophecy.)
The point is, the concept of the Prince That Was Promised is not common knowledge in King’s Landing, so when Rhaenyra shouts it angrily in front of her army, they likely have no idea what she’s talking about. Even in Game of Thrones (set 200 years later), it’s a relatively unknown concept among most citizens of the Seven Kingdoms; whispered occasionally between characters, but rarely spoken about in casual conversation. However, it’s possible that this one scene could subtly change our understanding of how the people of Westeros relate to the prophecy.
If Rhaenyra was boasting about being The Prince That Was Promised in front of dozens, if not hundreds of people, that means the secret is essentially out. Of course, nobody else has the actual context of what that means or why it matters, but if the phrase was passed down and spread over the following two centuries, it would mean that by the time Game of Thrones started, the prophecy had expanded far beyond the Targaryen line of succession. (Increasingly common rumors of ice zombies from beyond The Wall probably also helped fuel the collective hope for a prophesied savior.)
Overall, while this one small scene either reads as angry saber-rattling or tragic foreshadowing in the moment, what’s truly interesting about Rhaenyra’s proclamation in this episode is how it changes our understanding of what the rest of Westeros knows about the prophecy of The Prince That Was Promised. Up to this point, it was a well-kept Targaryen family secret, but after this, the secret is out. And that might help set in motion many of the other consequential decisions that bring the story from this particular moment in House of the Dragon all the way through to the end of Game of Thrones.
