While prepping our update for our big list of every Netflix show that’s been renewed, we’ve let one slip through the cracks (along with most outlets and even the eagle-eyed Wikipedia contributors), but we allow us to rectify that now. Netflix and local outlets have confirmed that In The Mud (En el barro) will be back for a third season soon. The news official was revealed on February 20th, hot on the heels of its hugely successful Season 2 release.
Created by Sebastián Ortega as a spin-off to the widely acclaimed El Marginal (which ran for five seasons), In The Mud explores the gritty, dangerous, and complex dynamics of a women’s prison. Produced in collaboration with Underground (a Telemundo Studios company), the series has become a massive regional hit and a breakout global success for Netflix’s Non-English TV slate.
The swift renewal of In The Mud comes as no surprise when looking at the numbers. According to official Netflix data, the second season debuted with a bang, racking up 2.5 million views globally within its first 2 days (it released on a Friday compared to the Thursday that season 1 released on). It ultimately spent three weeks in the global top 10s, picking up 42.2M hours watched, equating to 7.5M views.
The gritty drama firmly planted itself at the #6 spot on the global Top 10 for Non-English series. Unsurprisingly, it dominated Latin America and parts of Europe, hitting the weekly Top 10 in:
- Argentina (where it took the #1 spot)
- Spain
- Uruguay
- Chile
- Bolivia
- Paraguay
When all is said and done, viewership did decline on the show but clearly not enough to justify seeing the show facing the chop.
What to Expect from In The Mud Season 3 (And Will Season 4 Happen?)
Season 3 shakes up the power dynamics by moving the story to a volatile new prison in the tri-border area between Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay, according to local media outlet Caras. Following Season 2’s cliffhangers, Gladys “La Borges” (Ana Garibaldi) must navigate an unfamiliar, dangerous territory ruled by the fearsome Gringa Casares (Verónica Llinás). To survive these new gangs and their rules, Gladys is forced into increasingly risky decisions and unexpected alliances, particularly with Zurda (Lorena Vega) and Nicole (Eugenia “China” Suárez).
Fans will also be thrilled by the return of some major Season 1 faces. Netflix has confirmed that both María Becerra and Juana Molina will officially reprise their roles after being absent from Season 2, picking up their open storylines right where they left off.
Here is the expected core cast for the upcoming season:
- Ana Garibaldi as Gladys “La Borges” Guerra
- Verónica Llinás as Gringa Casares
- Eugenia “China” Suárez as Nicole
- Lorena Vega as Zurda
Plus the appearances of María Becerra, Juana Molina, Julieta Ortega, Carolina Ramírez, Érika de Sautu Riestra, Camila Peralta, and Inés Estévez.
While Netflix has only officially greenlit Season 3, the rumor mill is already spinning. In that report above, they cite journalist Laura Ubfal, who has reportedly hinted that a fourth season of In The Mud is actively in the works and may even be filmed back-to-back with the third installment.
