Is It Safe To Travel to Ibiza? Latest Advice As Spanish Island Is Hit by Severe Flooding, Canada Reviews

1 October 20252 Mins Read

Ibiza is typically a solid choice for some shoulder season sunshine, but this week the Spanish island – alongside neighbouring Formentera – was hit with a red weather warning after heavy rainfall led to severe flooding.

Images and videos show deluged streets and cars being swept along by rainwater. The red weather warning has since been lifted, but even so, you might be worried about visiting the Balearic Islands right now. So, is it safe to visit Ibiza and Formentera? And can you get a refund if you cancel or reschedule your trip? We’ve got all the info you need.

What caused the flooding?

The heavy flooding was caused by the aftermath of Hurricane Gabrielle, according to The Independent, as low-lying regions like the Balearics were swamped by torrential rain. Spain has seen frequent heavy rains and downpours in recent years, which scientists say is a direct result of climate change.

In Ibiza, popular tourist areas including Ibiza Town and San Antonio were particularly badly affected.

Is it safe to travel to Ibiza and Formentera?

Though more than 200 tourists had to be evacuated yesterday, and locals were warned to stay indoors, the weather has since returned to normal. On Wednesday morning, weather reports indicate sunny and warm weather in Ibiza and Formentera.

The FCDO (Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office) in the UK has not updated its Spain travel advice page, and – despite footage showing rainwater dripping from the ceiling in Ibiza airport – flights are running as normal.

Can I get a refund if I cancel or reschedule my trip?

As there has been no official advice issued against travelling to Spain, it’s unlikely you’ll be entitled to a refund if you choose to cancel.

Extreme weather in Europe

Because of climate change, Spain has been hit by heavy downpours and flooding frequently in recent years. This summer saw wildfires and extreme heatwaves in several destinations across the continent – a ‘new normal’ for summers in the Med, thanks to global warming.
