James Gunn sets a release date for Man of Tomorrow

3 September 20252 Mins Read

It’s official, the sequel to 2025’s Superman has been announced, and it will be called Man of Tomorrow. The DCU movie is due for a July 2027 release date.

Director and DC Studios co-head James Gunn announced the news on social media, accompanied by a striking piece of art from DC Comics President and Chief Creative Officer Jim Lee depicting Superman standing alongside Lex Luthor in his iconic Warsuit. The imagery strongly suggests that Luthor will take it upon himself to fight Superman directly, after he attempted to outsource the combat to Ultraman in the previous film. We may even see echoes of Nicholas Hoult’s standout “1A” sequence, but this time with Luthor himself orchestrating the blows. In the comics, the Warsuit allows Lex to go toe-to-toe with Superman, and it looks like the film will be drawing directly from that tradition.

Isabela Merced also teased soon after the announcement that she will return as Hawkgirl for the sequel. It seems safe to assume that Gunn will stick to his usual approach of casting a wide ensemble of superheroes, which has served him well in both the DC and Marvel universes.

The sequel has been on the horizon for a while. Back in August, Warner Bros. Discovery revealed in a shareholder letter that Gunn was already writing the next chapter of the “Super-family,” while also celebrating the success of his first entry. Superman (2025), starring David Corenswet, has gone on to gross more than $560 million worldwide.

As of now, it appears, Man of Tomorrow will follow the 2026 releases of Supergirl (directed by Craig Gillespie and starring Milly Alcock) and the body horror film Clayface (directed by James Watkins, written by Mike Flanagan, and starring Tom Rhys Harries). This is a quick turnaround for a Superman film, as Henry Cavill’s iteration of the character never got his own direct sequel. In fact, this marks the first Superman sequel since 1987’s Superman IV: The Quest for Peace.
