In the clip, Jay and Pamela were on their way to make their runway debut at New York Fashion Week. They offered an honest look at what traveling by airplane looks like as individuals living with osteogenesis imperfecta Type 3—a rare genetic condition characterized by extreme bone fragility and frequent fractures.
“We’re already at this airport for our trip to New York, and let me tell you about flying when you’re a power wheelchair user,” Jay told producers.
Pamela added, “Yeah, we do a bunch of paperwork even prior to showing up,” to which Jay continued, “Because if we don’t, so many things can go wrong.”
Jay explained, “Our power chairs go under the plane, and they could get damaged. And then, of course, we can’t go through metal detectors because it would just completely go off. So we have to get the pat-down, we got to wipe down the chair, make sure there’s no explosive device. We always have to explain, like, ‘We break easily.'”
Once Jay and Pamela arrived at their gate, they had to transfer to an aisle chair so their power chairs could be stored under the plane and they could be transported safely to their seats.
“But I hate it!” Pamela admitted. “I hate being picked up. I’ve never liked it.”
To the airport assistants, Jay reminded, “I know you’re in a rush, but we also break easy.” He then told producers, “It can definitely cause serious injuries, you know, if we do fall during the transfer.”
“You gotta do what you gotta do,” Pamela said.
Jay concluded, “Luckily, nobody got hurt. Our chairs made it in cargo, we’re off to New York!”
Aside from their traveling challenges, TLC teased, of the Jay & Pamela Season 2 premiere, “Raphael and Rene [Jay’s parents] get more than they bargained for when they help Jay & Pamela shop for a new bed. With his 30th birthday coming up, Jay has a big proposal for Pamela.”
Catch the Season 2 premiere of Jay & Pamela on Tuesday, June 30, at 10 p.m. ET on TLC and streaming the next day on TLC.
