Catch Terminator 2 on the big screen, and even in 3D
He said he would be back. Terminator 2: Judgment Day is gracing theaters once again later this year to celebrate the film’s 35th anniversary. James Cameron’s Oscar-winning action masterpiece was originally released on Aug. 29, 1991.
StudioCanal, Fathom Entertainment, and Rialto Pictures will bring the film to U.S. theaters starting on Aug. 28, as reported by Deadline. Global dates will vary between late August and early September, depending on region. Terminator 2 is the sequel to the 1984 original and is widely considered to be the best in the franchise, of which there are six movies in total. Across its many re-releases over the years, Terminator 2 has garnered over $500 million at the global box office.
On the re-release, Cameron says:
T2 was made for theaters, and our lovingly-prepared 3D version, coming back to the big screen, is the absolute best way to see the film. I believe it’s safe to do spoilers after 35 years, so SPOILER ALERT: the good guys win against the AI superintelligence! And maybe that’s a message of hope we all could use this summer.
Terminator 2 is still an impressive movie, even three and a half decades later. Turning Arnold Schwarzenegger’s killer robot into the hero of the movie is a fascinating subversion of viewer expectations that still works. The movie improves on everything from the first Terminator. Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton both turn in great performances reprising their roles from the first film, but the real star of Judgment Day is Robert Patrick as the menacing T-1000. The melding of practical and early computer-generated effects is especially impressive, even more so on the big screen.
The re-release will include showings in 4K and RealD 3D based on StudioCanal’s 2017 restoration of the film. Here is the full global release schedule for Terminator 2:
- Aug. 27: Germany, Latin America, and Czech Republic
- Aug. 28: U.S., Italy, and Poland
- Sept. 2: France
- Sept. 3: Australia, New Zealand, Netherlands, Sweden, and Hungary
- Sept. 4: U.K.
