King Charles just broke his silence regarding Prince Harry and Megan Markle‘s return to the United Kingdom, and he’s laying some serious ground rules.
A letter sent on behalf of King Charles that was obtained by the BBC notes that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex will not be working royals carrying out official engagements now that they have returned to the UK.
They will still not be able to use the “HRH” titles of His and Her Royal Highness, and are “private citizens with commercial and charitable interests,” the letter sent on behalf of the King by the Lord Chamberlain, a top Palace official, says. They also noted that the letter was sent to Prince Harry’s team, the government, the military, and Lord Lieutenants, according to Palace sources.
“It is well known that in January 2020 the Duke and Duchess stepped down from undertaking representative duties on behalf of the Sovereign, and are no longer working Members of the Royal Family,” the letter says.

Last month, PEOPLE reported that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were relocating to the United Kingdom with Prince Archie, 7, and Princess Lilibet, 5, for an extended period. The children were set to begin school there in September. The couple will maintain their home in Montecito, California, and their vacation property in Portugal. However, they will make Britain their private, non-royal home base.
Page Six is reporting that the duo chose to return to the United Kingdom in an attempt to be closer to Charles as he navigates cancer. They are also hoping to help their children build relationships with family. The family had a mini-reunion in July, when Charles invited them to his country home of Highgrove. It was the first time he saw Archie and Lilibet in four years. Queen Camilla was also in attendance.
