King Charles to Mark Major Royal First Amid Cancer Battle

21 May 20252 Mins Read

King Charles III will soon mark a major royal first alongside his wife, Queen Camilla, amid his battle with cancer.

On Wednesday, May 21, the royal family’s Instagram account announced that King Charles, 76, and Queen Camilla, 77, would soon embark on a trip to Canada—the British monarch’s first since taking over the throne in 2023.

King Charles was originally scheduled to travel to the Great White North in 2024. However, the trip was postponed because of his cancer diagnosis.

“His Majesty has visited Canada 19 times previously, and Her Majesty five times, although this is The King’s first visit as Sovereign,” the Instagram update read.

The two-day excursion will kick off on May 26 and last through May 27.

“On arrival in Ottawa, Their Majesties will join a community event showcasing the rich cultural heritage and diversity of Canada,” the post continued. “At Rideau Hall, His Majesty will hold audiences with the Governor General and Prime Minister Mark Carney. Her Majesty will be sworn in as a member of the Canadian Privy Council.”

Additionally, the Instagram update noted that King Charles and Queen Camilla will attend the State Opening of the Parliament of Canada. He will deliver the Speech from the Throne to the Senate Chamber.

On April 30, the monarch opened up about his cancer journey, sharing that “the darkest moments of illness can be illuminated by the greatest compassion,” per the BBC.

“I can vouch for the fact that it can also be an experience that brings into sharp focus the very best of humanity,” he continued.

The 76-year-old also praised the “profound impact of human connection—whether in the careful explanation from a specialist nurse, the hand held by a hospice volunteer, or the shared experience in a support group.”
