Kitty Kart 64 is Mario Kart meets psychological horror

Kitty Kart 64 promises a surreal nightmare where players can explore the sort of things fans aren’t supposed to see in a finished video game

At first glance, Kitty Kart 64 looks like a homage to the family-friendly racers of yore. But don’t let the adorable course backgrounds fool you. This is no mere kart game, but an exploration game with a horror twist.

Kitty Kart 64 isn’t out yet, but its developer, Scrunklesoft Interactive, has been uploading clips of the in-progress game on social media. Though this footage is often short, it does a phenomenal job of showcasing Kitty Kart 64‘s surreal, off-kilter world. This is a riff on bargain-bin video games, which explains why the vibes are immediately off, but that’s just the start. As you go along, you discover things like unfinished levels, scrapped ideas and dreamscapes, all of which hold much more than simple item blocks. Even the bonus levels look messed up.

It’s Mario Kart by way of creepypasta, like the sort of thing kids on a playground would try and convince each other totally happened before the age of cell phones. There are some modern aspects here, like an open-world map. But rather than traversing all these spaces normally, players can do things like drive out of bounds. Apparently, you’ll be able to make friends or rivals on the raceway, too.

There’s no set release date, and it’ll be interesting to see how Kitty Kart 64 maintains its allure when players go in expecting the unexpected. But if this sounds like something up your alley, there’s already a demo you can take for a spin.
