Legendary 1972 Film, Considered 'the Greatest American Film Ever Made,' Is Now Available to Stream For Free

Cinephiles will delight in the fact that The Godfatheris one of the latest classic films to hit the streamers. One of the most famous films in history, it has received a plethora of accolades and critical acclaims since its release in 1972. And now, you can rewatch the crime drama, free of charge, from the comfort and convivence of a streaming platform.

Directed by renowned filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola, the much-loved classic features an all-star cast, including Al Pacino, Robert Duvall, Diane Keaton, and James Caan. The film follows the Corleone family, a powerful Italian-American mafia dynasty in New York City. Grossing over $250 million at the box office against a $6 million budget, it was the highest-grossing film of 1972. The movie’s incredible successes saw the franchise expand with two sequels.

It’s such a classic, in fact, legendary filmmaker himself, Steven Spielberg, said he considered it “the greatest American film ever made,” which he noted before presenting Coppola with the 50th AFI Life Achievement Award in 2025.
