The last time anyone heard from Jim Sullivan, he called his wife and told her something he refused to explain.
It was March 5, 1975. Sullivan, a Malibu folk singer who’d struck up friendships with the likes of Lee Marvin, Lee Majors, and Dennis Hopper, was somewhere on Route 66, driving toward Nashville in his VW Beetle to chase one last shot at a music career. When his wife Barbara asked if he was okay, he told her, “You wouldn’t believe me if I told you,” then asked her to forget he’d said anything at all. He was never heard from again.
What happened next has kept true crime forums, UFO researchers, and music historians arguing for 50 years. Sullivan was never seen again after checking into the La Mesa Motel in Santa Rosa, New Mexico, but records show he never actually slept there.
Theories have piled up ever since. Some point to the desert itself, that Sullivan got disoriented and died of exposure, though that doesn’t explain why he wandered from a perfectly good motel room in the first place. Others suspect foul play, since the New Mexico corridor he vanished into was a known route for drug traffickers in the 1970s. A smaller camp believes he simply walked away from his old life on purpose, reportedly having once told his manager that if he ever wanted to disappear, he’d do it by walking into the desert and never coming back.
Then there’s the theory that refuses to die: that Sullivan was taken by the very thing he sang about. His car was found abandoned roughly 75 miles from Roswell, New Mexico, ground zero for America’s most famous UFO legend. His 1969 album, U.F.O., is packed with lyrics about long highways, leaving loved ones behind, and encounters with beings from beyond, details that read very differently once you know how his story ends.
