Legendary '90s Rock Band Reveals Hilarious Story Behind Their Most Iconic Performance

8 May 20252 Mins Read

What comes to mind when you think of The Goo Goo Dolls?

The 90s haircuts, John Rzeznik’s angsty vocals, and one song in particular: “Iris.”

The iconic rock ballad was a top charter in the nineties, and cemented the band into music history. Many voices have been thrown out singing this song as loud as possible when it comes on the radio, and it has spawned many iconic moments in pop culture.

One of these moments is the band’s legendary 2004 Buffalo, New York performance where torrential rain poured down during the performance of “Iris.” The performance has been revered for years as one of the best live recordings, with many calling the rain a “paid actor” due to how well it complements the performance. It’s a beautiful moment, with the whole crowd belting out the emotional chorus while they get drenched by the biblical downpour.

The band has revealed however, that a lot more went wrong with this performance than you’d think.

That’s right. During one of the most emotionally stirring performances of the 2000s, manhole covers were literally exploding.

Despite all of the insanity surrounding this performance and the torrential rain’s attempts to destroy the surrounding area, it’s still just as revered as ever.

Commenters sang the performance’s praises, writing things like:

“That truly was the concert of all concerts.”

“There’s no other way to watch “Iris,” unless is with that video on surround sound! 🥹🤎”

“Legendary performance, the universe decided to give us all a special moment and memory that night.”

Music has given us many incredible moments that will stand the test of time, and this performance is no exception to that, exploding manholes and all.
