Legendary Soap Actress, 85, Makes Rare Public Appearance

27 May 20253 Mins Read

It’s been 13 years since Daytime Emmy winner Susan Flannery last appeared as the iconic Stephanie Forrester on The Bold and The Beautiful. But she hasn’t stayed away from the friends she’s made along the way. The beloved actress spent her Memorial Day weekend catching up with a former co-star.

Flannery spent some time this holiday weekend with her former Bold and the Beautiful co-star Ian Buchanan. Buchanan shared a photo of the festivities to his Instagram account captioning the picture, “Wonderful Weekend in San Diego! ❤️🌺❤️”

Taking to the comments, fellow actor Rebecca Buddig commented, “❤️❤️❤️”, while fans shared excitement in seeing the two actors together again. One fan said, “Lovely photo and great to see Susan Flannery! I’m a long time soap opera fan of you both!❤️❤️❤️,” while another added “Susan and everyone else looks great.
Have an amazing Memorial weekend!”

Flannery’s professional television career began in 1963 on Burke’s Law as a secretary, but got her big break three years later in 1966 when she assumed the role of Dr. Laura Spencer Horton on Days of Our Lives. She stayed on Days for nearly five years before leaving in 1975 when the soap opera expanded from thirty minutes to an hour. Her next big break happened over ten years later when former Days of Our Lives head writer Bill Bell was launching a companion series to his hit CBS soap opera The Young and the Restless titled The Bold and The Beautiful. It was there that Flannery inhabited the role of the powerful battleaxe matriarch Stephanie Forrester, a role that she portrayed from 1987 until her retirement in 2012.

Flannery has won four Daytime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. First in 1975 for her role on Days of Our Lives and then again in 2000,2002, and 2003 for The Bold and the Beautiful.

In addition to acting, Flannery is also a professional television director. She directed an episode of Guiding Light in 2008 and has directed 36 episodes of the web series Venice: The Series as well as an episode of the Freeform series The Fosters.
