Leonardo DiCaprio, 50, Says He Turned 'Emotionally 35 Last Year'

13 August 20252 Mins Read

Leonardo DiCaprio may be 50, but the Oscar-winning actor feels like he’s “emotionally 35.”

The beloved Hollywood star, known for films ranging from Titanic to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, sat down with iconic director Paul Thomas Anderson for a conversation in Esquire‘s Mavericks of Hollywood issue ahead of the release of their new film, One Battle After Another.

During the intimate conversation, Anderson asked DiCaprio about his recent milestone birthday, to which DiCaprio answered honestly.

“Here’s a question Esquire wants me to ask. ‘You turned fifty last year. Does it feel like a natural time for reflection?” Anderson asked DiCaprio.

In response, DiCaprio said, “You turned emotionally thirty-five last year.”

When asked again if it feels like a time for reflection, DiCaprio explained that getting older means one doesn’t want to “waste your time.”

“I can only imagine how the next few decades are going to progress. I look at my mother, for example, and she just says exactly what she thinks and wastes no time. She spends no time trying to fake it,” he shared.

Elsewhere in the conversation, Anderson told DiCaprio to answer “as quickly as” he could when he asked, “If you didn’t know how old you are, how old are you right now?”

DiCaprio’s response was “Thirty-two.”

When asked what his biggest regret is, DiCaprio knew right away.

“I’ll say it even though you’re here: My biggest regret is not doing Boogie Nights,” he told Anderson, who directed the legendary film about the porn industry. “It was a profound movie of my generation. I can’t imagine anyone but Mark [Wahlberg] in it. When I finally got to see that movie, I just thought it was a masterpiece. It’s ironic that you’re the person asking that question, but it’s true.”
