Lexar’s new SSD sticks to your iPhone and can survive nearly a 10-foot drop Canada reviews

6 October 20252 Mins Read

First announced in July, Lexar’s ES5 Magnetic Portable SSD is now available in a 1TB capacity for $119.99 or 2TB for $199.99. A 4TB version is also planned, but availability isn’t expected until Q1 of 2026.

The ES5 is compatible with any USB-equipped device and delivers read and write speeds of up to 2000MB/s. It’s quite a bit larger than Lexar’s Professional Go Portable SSD that debuted over a year ago, but also twice as fast. It’s also compatible with mobile devices like tablets and smartphones, but Lexar is targeting Apple users specifically with support for MagSafe, so you can stick the ES5 to the back of any iPhone model that supports MagSafe accessories. Lexar also includes a metal ring that can be stuck to other devices or surfaces where you might want to mount the drive.

When connected to iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max models, the ES5 unlocks 4K Apple ProRes recording at up to 60fps, or up to 120fps with the iPhone 16 and 17. When paired with the Galaxy S25, the drive is fast enough to capture Samsung Pro Video clips at up to 8K/30fps. The SSD also has an IP65 dust and water resistant rating so splashes are okay, but it won’t survive a complete dunking. Should it fall onto dryer and harder surfaces, Lexar says the ES5 is drop resistant from heights up to 3 meters, or just shy of 10 feet.
