Liberals are projected to win the 2025 federal election and here’s what that means

30 July 20252 Mins Read

The Liberals are projected to win Canada’s 2025 federal election.

That means Mark Carney will be the next Prime Minister of Canada.

CBC News, Global News, and the Toronto Star have projected a Liberal win in Canada’s 2025 federal election.

UPDATE: Following CTV News projecting a Liberal minority government on election night, now CBC News has also called a Liberal minority on April 29.

It’s expected that the Liberals will finish with 169 seats, the Conservatives with 144, the Bloc Québécois with 22, the NDP with seven and the Greens with one.

With Canada’s electoral system, there are 343 seats available in Parliament, and a party needs 172 seats to form a majority government.

Now that a minority government is expected, the Liberals will have to depend on support from other parties to govern.

If the Liberal Party had reached the 172-seat threshold and won a majority, Carney and the Liberals would have had a simpler path to governing.

Not only are the Liberals set to form government, but Carney has also secured a win in the Nepean riding.

Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre has lost his seat in Carleton to Liberal Bruce Fanjoy.

Liberal Wade Chang flipped NDP leader Jagmeet Singh’s Burnaby Central riding, and Singh has announced he will resign as party leader.

Green Party co-leader Elizabeth May was re-elected in her Vancouver Island riding of Saanich-Gulf Islands, but co-leader Jonathan Pedneault failed to secure a Montreal seat.

Bloc Québécois leader Yves-François Blanchet won in his riding of Beloeil-Chambly.

Ballots are still being counted and verified by Elections Canada, and preliminary results for all ridings are expected to be available on April 29.

You can read more about the projected results, Mark Carney’s dramatic victory speech, Jagmeet Singh’s resignation as party leader, and more at Narcity’s election hub.
