Grand Theft Auto 6 is one of the most anticipated releases of the decade. Many video game publishers have avoided releasing games too close to its Nov. 19 launch date — not Nintendo, though. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Remake releases only two weeks before GTA 6. Saturday Night Live saw this as an opportunity to create a Weekend Update segment where the protagonists of both games have a hilariously immature debate as each character analyzes the other’s flaws.
SNL claims GTA 6’s focus on sex, chaos, and destruction is why it has a bigger audience
The Weekend Update segment, which stars Mikey Day as Link and Marcello Hernandez as Jason, features a lot of trash-talking. Jason criticizes Ocarina of Time due to its lack of sex appeal, violence, fun items, and “baddies,” whereas Grand Theft Auto VI revels in “destruction, chaos, and sex.” While it’s ultimately a lighthearted bit, it gets to the heart of why GTA 6 has become such a widely anticipated game, even among people who don’t typically play games.
The target audiences for both games are quite different. The Legend of Zelda games like Ocarina of Time offer a relaxing experience, where players are encouraged to uncover Hyrule’s deep lore, solve puzzles, and explore peacefully. Meanwhile, GTA 6 is for those looking for a fast-paced experience and are always ready to blow stuff up. The story is bound to be exciting and morally ambiguous, riddled with drugs, sex, and guns. There’s a reason why GTA 6 is rated M and Ocarina of Time is rated E10+, and SNL clearly argues that this is part of GTA 6’s appeal.
These key differences may help explain why so many Grand Theft Auto fans don’t play video games outside of this franchise. Nintendo’s Ocarina of Time remake launches Nov. 5, giving fans precisely two weeks to play it before Grand Theft Auto 6 releaseson Nov. 19. As Weekend Update’s Colin Jost put it, this really is the “Barbenheimer of video games.”
