Lisbon’s Famous Pastéis de Belém Pastry Shop Has Opened A Second Location, Canada Reviews

21 July 20253 Mins Read

Queuing up at Lisbon’s Pastéis de Belém is just as integral to the experience as actually sinking your teeth into one of those legendary pastries, but now, there’s a new spot in Lisbon to snap up your sweet treats.

It’s right on the same street as the original shop, now occupying what used to be the exit for Pastéis de Belém’s interior courtyard at number 68 on Rua de Belém.

The historic shop stretches all the way from numbers 84 to 92, but this second counter means there’s now a grab-and-go spot at each end. ‘New counter, same taste. Just next door, with a fresh look but still the same fresh-from-the-oven Pastéis de Belém,’ said the brand.

And that’s precisely the vibe inside. Its design nods to the original bakery which dates all the way back to the nineteenth century, and Viterbro Interior Design (the studio behind the project) said it was ‘designed to honor the tradition and legacy of the brand,’ while offering ‘a fresh, elegant, and contemporary perspective,’ with the aim of creating ‘a space that embraces history, while speaking to the present and future of a brand that welcomes millions of visitors each year.’

Recommended: I went on a food tour of Copenhagen inspired by ‘The Bear’ – these are the best things I ate.

The decor includes references to Portugal’s traditional tile work and white and blue colour scheme. ‘Working with a national icon like Pastéis de Belém demanded deep respect for its heritage — but also a dose of creativity to bring that legacy into a modern, functional space,’ said Gracinha Viterbo, creative director of Viterbo Interior Design.

But if designing a new space was a challenge, that’s nothing compared to what the studio has coming up next: a full renovation of the original 1837 shop, ‘preserving the architectural and emotional essence of the place while introducing functional upgrades and an aesthetic language that fits the times.’

It will be carried out in phases from 2026 to ensure the shop can continue to operate, so stay tuned for details on its revamp.
