The Los Angeles City Council has approved an expansion and modernization project for the L.A. Convention Center, adding 324,000 square feet of space.

The Los Angeles City Council has approved a project to expand and modernize the L.A. Convention Center. The project aims to address the city’s competitive disadvantage in hosting large conventions due to the insufficient availability of contiguous space.

The expansion will connect the existing South and West Exhibit Halls by adding 190,000 square feet, creating a contiguous hall with over 750,000 square feet of space. Additionally, the project includes 39,000 square feet of new meeting room space and 95,000 square feet of multipurpose space.

The development is expected to generate significant economic benefits, including the creation of more than 15,000 jobs and a $652 million increase in General Fund tax revenue over 30 years. It is also projected to attract over $150 million in additional visitor spending annually.

The approval signals the city’s commitment to enhancing its infrastructure to support the tourism industry and local businesses, particularly in Downtown Los Angeles. The expansion is expected to increase bookings for the convention center and attract larger-scale events.

The project involves collaboration with several partners, including AEG, Plenary Group, Webcor, PCL, and Populous. The timeline for the project’s completion has not been specified.

This development is part of broader efforts to position Los Angeles as a leading destination for conventions and events, particularly as other cities have completed or are undertaking similar expansions.
