‘MacGyver’ Fans May Not Recognize Richard Dean Anderson, 76, With His White Hair

Richard Dean Anderson may be best known for the title role in MacGyver, but we barely recognized the beloved TV star with full white hair.

Anderson, 76, got his first taste of fame in the soap opera world, appearing on General Hospital. But it was his role in MacGyver as Angus MacGyver, who works as a troubleshooter, that catapulted him to mainstream success. MacGyver was known for being able to solve any problem with a laundry list of household items under pressure. Fast forward to the present day, and Anderson made a rare appearance at a recent convention alongside fellow actor Veronica Cartwright. Sporting white hair and a matching white beard, the fan-favorite actor smiled brightly at the fun event.

Why Doesn’t Richard Dean Anderson Act Anymore?

Anderson’s last role onscreen was in one episode of the cult-favorite TV comedy series, Don’t Trust the B— in Apartment 23, in 2013. The show starred Krysten Ritter and James Van Der Beek, and was sadly canceled too soon. But when it comes to Anderson tackling a major role in film or TV these days, it seems like the former TV star just isn’t that interested.

“He still gets offered guest spots on different shows and, if he wanted, he could probably land a series again like his old pal Tom Selleck did. But Rick just doesn’t seem to be interested,” an insider told Closer last year. “He still reads scripts here and there, but nothing has piqued his interest enough to get him to sign on.”

The piece went on to say that Anderson lives “on the outer reaches of Malibu right at the beach” and still enjoys doing charity work and the occasional fan convention.

“But as far as acting, he retired in 2013 to focus on raising his daughter Wylie, who was 15 at the time, and he really hasn’t looked back,” it continued.
