About a month out from its premiere date, audiences are finally getting a trailer for Marvel Zombies. The footage from Marvel Animation’s new show begins by telling fans that, despite putting out animated shows like Marvel’s What If…? and Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man (a personal favorite), this new series is definitely not for kids. It’s rated TV-MA, has a ton of blood and gore, and starts with a headshot from an arrow to reinforce that point as it cuts to hypermanic music (by BabyMetal and Poppy) and zombie ultraviolence. It also prominently features a couple of Marvel characters who have been waiting for their moment in the spotlight for a painfully long time.
Marvel Zombies is pretty much exactly what it sounds like. Presumably picking up where the one-shot What If episode left off, the series is set to showcase a zombie-infested Wakanda, zombified Avengers (including an undead Namor), and a new cast of alternate reality heroes, like Yelena Belova, Kamala Khan, and Red Guardian — all voiced by their respective actors, who can now curse thanks to the show’s adult audience. There are also a couple of cool sequences involving Spider-Man beheading an army of zombies with his web and Blade showing off his swordsmanship against an undead Ghost.
Shang Chi also appears in this series, and although fans have been waiting for the character’s return since his debut film in 2021, it seems Simu Liu is stuck reprising his role in animation instead. However, outside of Wesley Snipes appearing in Deadpool & Wolverine, this is the first time Blade has debuted in the MCU. It may be worth paying attention to who voices the vampire hunter in Marvel Zombies (because we doubt it’s Mahershala Ali).
Marvel Zombies will only have four episodes and is loosely based on comics of the same name by The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman. It’s directed by Bryan Andrews and premieres Sept. 24 on Disney Plus.
