Matt Reeves confirms The Penguin season 2 is in discussion

Cristin Milioti won the Emmy for lead actress in a limited series on Sunday for her portrayal of the mafia scion Sofia Gigante in HBO’s The Batman spinoff The Penguin, yet that category might be deceiving. The Batman director Matt Reeves, who serves as an executive producer and writing supervisor on The Penguin, told Variety he is in discussions with showrunner Lauren Lefranc about a second season of the hit series.

“We love the show, and we think our cast is so incredible. The work that Lauren and the writers did was incredible. Our passion was in it, but never in our wildest dreams could we imagine it would have been received in the way that it was,” Reeves said in the interview.

The Penguin received 24 Emmy nominations, with Milioti’s win adding to the eight Creative Arts Emmys the show received including Outstanding Prosthetic Makeup for the work used to transform star Colin Farrell into the disfigured mobster Oswald Cobb. In a red carpet interview with MTV, Reeves said that Farrell would be willing to return for season 2, but the creative team would need to find a story that could match the first season, where Oz and Sofia battled for control of Gotham’s underworld and a potent new drug.

Reeves is mostly focused on The Batman 2, which is set to begin filming next spring. Reeves praised Milioti’s performance and Lefranc’s version of the comic book character first introduced in Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale’s 1997 comic Batman: The Long Halloween, but said Sofia won’t make an appearance in the second film in his Crime Saga. That’s because the script for the film had already been mostly written by the time Milioti was appearing in the show, and Reeves told MTV he couldn’t figure out a way to fit her into the existing story.

The Batman 2 isn’t scheduled to be released until Oct. 1, 2027, but in the meantime, fans of Batman villains can look out for a Clayface movie directed by James Wilkins releasing on Sept. 11, 2026.
