May 2025 U.S. Airline Traffic Data Down 2.1% from the Same Month Last Year :: Hospitality Trends

  May 2025 U.S. Airline Traffic Data Down 2.1% from the Same Month Last Year

U.S. airlines carried 85.2 million systemwide (domestic and international) scheduled service passengers in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS). When adjusted for seasonality, May enplanements are up 0.5% from April and down 3.5% from the all-time high reached in June 2024.

BTS reported 74.2 million domestic passengers and 11 million international passengers on U.S. airlines flights in May, not adjusting for seasonality.

  • Systemwide enplanements (85.2M) were down 2.1% from the all-time May high (87.1) reached in 2024.
  • Domestic enplanements (74.2M) were down 2.2% from the all-time May high (75.8) reached in 2024.
  • International enplanements (11.03M) were down 2% from the all-time May high (11.26) reached in 2024.

Seasonally adjusted trends in U.S. airlines passenger enplanements

May seasonally adjusted

  • Systemwide enplanements (80.2M) were down 3.5% from the all-time high of 83.1 million reached in June 2024.
  • Domestic enplanements (69.7M) were down 3.7% from the all-time high of 72.3 million reached in June 2024.
  • International enplanements (10.52M) were down 6.4% from the all-time high of 11.25 million reached in December 2024.
