Metallica is showing Toronto some serious love — and it’s not just with their recent shows at the Rogers Centre.
The globally famous rock band just announced that they’re donating $40,000 to Daily Bread Food Bank through their foundation, All Within My Hands (AWMH), and the timing couldn’t be better.
Toronto’s hunger crisis has gotten worse, and these funds are going to help get food into the hands of people who really need it.
Toronto declared food insecurity a state of emergency back in December — that’s how serious things have gotten.
According to the 2024 ‘Who’s Hungry’ report, over 1 in 10 Torontonians are now relying on food banks. Between January and March alone, there were nearly 1 million visits to Daily Bread member food banks —four times higher than the same period in 2020.
“We want to wholeheartedly thank the members of Metallica for this incredibly generous donation,” said Neil Hetherington, CEO of Daily Bread Food Bank. “Right now, far too many are struggling, and these funds will help support food bank clients as the hunger crisis in our city reaches an all-time high. This gift means even more considering the band has a history of donating to the Daily Bread cause.”
Metallica’s $40,000 donation will translate into around 40,000 meals — basically, every dollar is a meal — thanks to Daily Bread’s work distributing fresh produce, proteins, and dairy across 205 food programs citywide.
Renée Richardson, Director of Philanthropy at AWMH, shared that learning about the city’s hunger crisis was a wake-up call.
“Learning that there is widespread food insecurity in Toronto reminds us just how many people are faced with making tough decisions and need assistance,” she said.
“We are thankful Daily Bread is there to bridge the gap for so many families.”
In 2017, Metallica established AWMH to give back to communities that have supported the band. Since its inception, the foundation’s collective efforts have raised more than $20 million.
This isn’t the first time they’ve helped out the Daily Bread Food Bank. They donated all proceeds from a surprise show at The Opera House to the organization back in 2016.
It comes as Metallica played two sold out shows at Toronto’s Rogers Centre last week, as a part of their global M72 World Tour.
