Michael J. Fox to Receive Emmys' Highest Honor for His Parkinson's Fight

29 July 20263 Mins Read

Michael J. Fox will receive the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award at the 78th Emmy Awards.

Fox’s storied television career includes 19 Emmy nominations and five wins, including Outstanding Guest Actor In A Drama Series (2009 for Rescue Me) and Outstanding Lead Actor In A Comedy Series (2000 for Spin City, 1988 for Family Ties, 1987 for Family Ties, 1986 for Family Ties). He is also nominated for a 2026 Emmy Award (Outstanding Guest Actor In A Comedy Series, Shrinking).

Why will Michael J. Fox receive the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award at the Emmys?

The Television Academy’s Bob Hope Humanitarian Award recognizes outstanding contributions to philanthropic efforts that have a lasting impact on society. Fox will receive this award in honor of his commitment to Parkinson’s disease research and advocacy.

While Fox rose to fame as an actor, he is now also well-known for his dedication to the Parkinson’s community. He first publicly disclosed his early-onset Parkinson’s diagnosis in 1998, revealing that he received the news in 1991 at the age of 29. Two years later, in 2000, he launched The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.

Fox’s unexpected diagnosis didn’t stop him from acting. He reportedly noticed a tremor in his pinky finger while filming Doc Hollywood in 1991. The Emmy-winning actor consulted a neurologist who gave him the shocking news. Despite his diagnosis, Fox continued to work, filming movies such as The American President and Frighteners and starring in ABC’s Spin City.

Even though he announced his retirement from acting in 2020, Fox has taken on a few more roles, including the guest spot as Gerry in Apple TV’s Shrinking.

Chair of the Television AcademyCris Abrego said of the actor, “Michael J. Fox is one of television’s most beloved and enduring performers whose work has left an indelible mark on generations of audiences.”

Abrego continued, “The Television Academy is proud to honor him for his extraordinary leadership in advancing Parkinson’s research, transforming public awareness and inspiring global support through The Michael J. Fox Foundation, whose investments have accelerated scientific breakthroughs and the search for a cure. He continues to exemplify compassion, courage, and service, reflecting the power of one individual to drive meaningful change.”

The Bob Hope Humanitarian Award is not the first honor the actor has received for his philanthropic efforts. He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2025, presented with the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in 2022, and was included in Time Magazine’s list of 100 people who are transforming the world in 2024.
