Montreal police say at least one of their officers has been injured in a central neighbourhood after responding to reports of shots fired.
Police have blocked off a residential street in the Côte-des-Neiges district. They say the officer was injured around 11:35 a.m.
“We’re asking everyone to avoid the sector. The situation is not under control,” Jean-Pierre Brabant, police spokesman, said in a recorded statement.
“Officers are still working on scene, but (police are) confirming that at least one of its officers was injured during this police intervention.”
Police have told The Canadian Press they are looking for a suspect.
Public safety officials have issued an emergency alert about an armed and dangerous suspect in the area.
The alert warns local residents to stay indoors and for people to avoid the area.
Quebec’s Transport Department says it has closed sections of the Décarie expressway and other parts of the highway network in the central part of the city due to the ongoing police operation.
Domestic Security Minister Ian Lafrenière said on X, “my thoughts are with the families of the people injured.”
