Montreal’s getting a large low-cost grocery store this week

If you’ve been hunting for cheaper groceries in 2025 (and honestly, who isn’t?), a new Montreal spot might be about to save you some serious cash.

Liquidation Marie, a discount grocery chain known for offering surplus and clearance inventory at ridiculously low prices, is opening its very first location on the island of Montreal.

After expanding across Greater Montreal with stores in Saint-Zotique, Mascouche, Valleyfield, and Saint-Jérôme, Liquidation Marie is now bringing its major deals to the city, setting up shop in Mercier–Hochelaga-Maisonneuve. The new store, located on Hochelaga Street, will officially open its doors on Friday, May 2, 2025, at 10 a.m., according to owner Marie-Ève Breton, who confirmed the news to Narcity Québec.

At 5,300 square feet, the new Montreal location will be about the same size as Liquidation Marie’s largest store in Saint-Jérôme.

Unlike traditional grocery stores, Liquidation Marie’s offerings change constantly based on arrivals, meaning every visit brings new surprises and savings.

“More stores mean I can buy in bulk and get better prices,” Breton recently explained to Narcity Québec. “For example, before I bought a box, now I can buy a pallet. That makes a big difference,” she said.

Breton added that more year-round staples, including meat and milk, will be consistently available, showing how the brand is moving toward a more stable inventory.

Liquidation Marie’s model is simple: the store buys products that major chains refuse for reasons like packaging errors, format changes, overstock, or items nearing their best-before dates. That means customers can score seriously discounted fruits, vegetables, meat, cheese, frozen foods, and more.

“Everything has gotten so expensive!” Breton said. “My prices are always based on what I paid for the food, not on the product’s value. That’s really my thinking — if I can sell it really cheap, I will.”

Finally, Liquidation Marie assures customers that even with the rock-bottom prices, all food sold meets the standards set by Quebec’s Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPAQ), guaranteeing consumer safety.
