Montreal’s metro is getting 5 new stations, and here are their names

9 September 20252 Mins Read

Montreal’s metro map is getting an update.

On Tuesday, the Société de transport de Montréal (STM) released the names of five new stations expected to be added to the underground transit network’s blue line.

Set to open in 2029, the extension will add stops in Saint-Michel, Saint-Leonard and Anjou. Unlike past stations, these ones won’t just take their names from nearby streets. Instead, the STM says they’re meant to highlight Montreal’s diversity, history and the people who shaped it.

Here are the names you’ll see on the map:

  • Vertières — a nod to the 1803 battle that secured Haiti’s independence, chosen to reflect Saint-Michel’s Haitian community.
  • Mary-Two-Axe-Earley — honouring the Kahnawake activist who fought to restore Indigenous women’s rights under the Indian Act.
  • Césira-Parisotto — named after Mother Anselme, a key figure in Quebec’s Italian community who founded schools and a hospital.
  • Madeleine-Parent — recognizing the union leader and feminist who spent her life pushing for social justice.
  • Anjou — the new terminus, named after the borough itself to make navigating easier.

According to an STM news release, the naming process followed six main guidelines. To avoid confusion, existing Green line names like Pie-IX, Viau and Langelier weren’t repeated on the Blue line. Instead, the goal was to pick new, evocative names that reflect Montreal’s history and diversity, while steering clear of controversial or commercial references. Public input was also considered, and the final choices highlight contributions from women, Indigenous leaders and ethnocultural communities

The blue line first opened in 1986, and last saw an addition back in 1988. The $5-billion project includes new bus terminals, a pedestrian tunnel and other upgrades, though those won’t be ready until 2031.
