Montreal’s stuck in a serious gloomy weather loop and it’s not letting up anytime soon

20 May 20253 Mins Read

In case you haven’t noticed, clouds have parked themselves over Montreal. And according to local weather experts, they’re not going anywhere anytime soon.

As per a Tuesday report from MétéoMédia, southern Quebec is currently caught in an Omega Block — a weather pattern where a ridge of high pressure gets wedged between two low-pressure systems, disrupting the usual west-to-east flow. The result? Days of stalled-out cloud cover and on-and-off drizzle, especially over the southern part of the province.

“It’s like a time loop,” the outlet noted, where each day feels just as gloomy as the last. Meteorologist Alexandra Giroux added that this slow-moving setup is expected to stick around through the weekend, with Montreal right in the middle of it.

With showers and clouds taking up the majority of Victoria Day weekend, this week’s forecast for the city reflects that grim outlook. Tuesday, May 20 brings a high of 13°C, a low of 9°C, and a 30% chance of showers. That pattern holds through most of the week, with little variation in conditions.

Wednesday may bring a brief break, with just a slight risk of rain in the morning and otherwise mostly cloudy skies. The temperature should reach around 16°C, possibly making it the most comfortable day of the week. But by Thursday, the rain makes a return, with light showers developing late morning and a cooler high of 12°C.

Friday is expected to bring steady light rain and a high of only 10°C, continuing the stretch of below-seasonal temperatures.

For those hoping to spend some time outdoors or finally set up the patio, the weekend won’t bring much relief. Saturday will be mostly overcast with periods of light rain, while Sunday might offer a modest improvement, with a mix of sun and cloud and temperatures reaching 16°C.

There is some hope on the horizon, though. Monday could bring a shift, with a mix of sun and clouds and a high near 20°C. But even then, a few scattered showers may still sneak in.

For now, there are no severe weather alerts in effect for Montreal, but you should probably keep your umbrella handy until the sun returns for good.
