Mortal Kombat II’s trailer has arrived, set to deliver a video game-accurate Mortal Kombat tournament, with all the carnage and dark humor the franchise is known for.
In the trailer, Karl Urban’s Johnny Cage is spotted at a bar, where a fan recognizes him and cracks some meta jokes about his career and Hollywood reboots. Not long after, Raiden (Tadanobu Asano) and Sonya (Jessica McNamee) approach him in a parking garage to recruit him for the tournament.
Set to “Wu-Tang Clan Ain’t Nuthing Ta F’ Wit,” the trailer showcases several high-energy matchups, including Cage facing off against Kitana (Adeline Rudolph) and Baraka, Jax (Mehcad Brooks) battling both Jade (Tati Gabrielle) and later Kitana, and Sindel (Ana Thu Nguyen) unleashing her iconic scream attack. Scorpion (Hiroyuki Sanada) is also briefly shown clashing with Noob Saibot. The trailer ends with a rapid-fire montage of brutalities and fatalities, promising the franchise’s signature over-the-top violence.
As far as the plot goes, it’s pretty similar to the klassic games, which sees Earthrealm one defeat away from being invaded and ruled over by Outworld’s very own Shao Kahn (played by bodybuilder Martyn Ford.)
A kountdown event led up to the trailer release, featuring an interactive reveal of all the fighters participating in the tournament through posters of the actors. The presentation resembled the classic fighter selection screen from the games, allowing viewers in the chat to vote by choosing between options 1 or 2 to determine which character would be unveiled first.
Mortal Kombat 2 is slated to be released in theaters on Oct. 24.
