Most Europeans Plan Regional Holidays as Travel Intentions Rise for 2026

Travel Intentions Remain High

The European Travel Commission’s (ETC) Monitoring Sentiment for Intra-European Travel (Wave 25) indicates that 81% of Europeans plan to travel between June and November 2026. This figure is four percentage points higher than the same period last year. The increase in travel intentions is observed across almost all age groups, with the highest rate among those aged 45–54 at 86%.

Nearly two-thirds (64%) of respondents plan to travel within Europe, and more than half (55%) expect to take two or more trips over the next six months. The data suggests that Europeans continue to prioritize travel despite ongoing economic pressures, geopolitical tensions, and climate-related challenges.

Preferred Destinations and Experiences

Southern and Mediterranean Europe remains the leading choice for European travellers, with 61% expressing intent to visit the region. This represents a 4-percentage-point increase compared to the previous year. The most popular countries are Spain (14%), Italy (12%), France (8%), and Greece (7%). These destinations are favored for sun-and-beach holidays, as well as cultural and city experiences.

Interest in major tourist destinations has risen slightly to 48%. However, a majority (52%) of Europeans prefer lesser-known or off-the-beaten-path locations. Avoiding crowded destinations is cited as important by 11% of respondents, while 9% identify overcrowding as a primary travel concern.

Factors Influencing Travel Decisions

Safety is the most significant factor in destination choice, noted by 20% of travellers. Pleasant weather (15%) and attractive deals (14%) follow as key considerations. Financial concerns remain prominent, with 22% of respondents citing rising travel costs and 17% citing personal finances as primary concerns.

Geopolitical issues are increasingly affecting travel decisions. Concern about the conflict in the Middle East has doubled from 7% to 14% compared to last year. Additionally, 11% of Europeans remain concerned about the war in Ukraine. Despite increased fuel prices and higher travel costs, air travel is still the preferred mode of transport for 53% of travellers.

Climate Impact on Travel Choices

Climate considerations are influencing travel behaviour for 76% of Europeans. Among those adapting their plans, 16% seek destinations with milder temperatures, and 15% avoid places prone to extreme heat or check weather forecasts before booking. Two-thirds of respondents indicate they would change their travel plans in response to climate-related disruptions or official safety advisories.

Seasonal Trends and Spending

Summer remains the peak travel season, with 86% of Europeans planning trips between June and September. There is a growing preference for early summer, with demand for June travel up 3 percentage points year-on-year.

Despite concerns over travel expenses, spending intentions are stable. The most common budget range is €1,500–€2,500, cited by 29% of respondents. Accommodation, food and beverages, and activities are expected to account for the largest share of travel spending.
