Movie Monday: ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ Takes Flight, Best TV Shows to Binge Watch

16 June 20252 Mins Read

There’s a new adorable creature atop this week’s box office.

After three weeks on top, Lilo & Stitch fell behind the live-action adaptation of How to Train Your Dragon, which debuted on Friday. Domestically, the film took in $83.7 million—almost double the opening of its animated predecessor, which earned $43.7 million back in 2010. Add in another $114.1 internationally, and that brings this Dragon’s hoard to a monstrous $197.8 total in its first frame.

But despite the Hiccup in Lilo & Stitch’s plans, it still pulled a respectable second. This week, it abducted an additional $15.5 million from the wallets of U.S. moviegoers. That brings its global cume to $858.4 million.

A24’s Materialists, another box-office newcomer starring Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal, took third place. The romcom earned $12 million. Whether that’s enough money to satisfy a materialist’s heart, however, is another matter.

In its fourth weekend since release, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning cruised to an additional $10.3 million. It total, the film has earned $506.8 million worldwide.

And rounding out the top five this week is From the World of John Wick: Ballerina. It experienced the biggest percentage drop, losing 61.6% of earnings compared to last week. That means it took in $9.4 million, bringing its current worldwide total to $91.5 million worldwide.

Looking down the list, The Life of Chuck, starring Tom Hiddleston, earned $2.1 million. That was good enough for ninth place. Meanwhile, The Unholy Trinity, a Western featuring Pierce Brosnan and Samuel L. Jackson, found itself hogtied at 15th place. It lassoed a mere $560,000.
